Kenya-Tanzania Safari Route
Time your trip to the migration if you can, use licensed guides and 4x4s, and build in slack days rather than chasing a single river-crossing on a fixed date.
Overview
The Masai Mara, Serengeti and Ngorongoro form the single most complete Great Migration ecosystem on earth: one continuous landscape, split by a national border, across which more than a million wildebeest, zebra and gazelle move each year. UNESCO notes the Serengeti is contiguous with the Masai Mara to the north, so this is not two destinations but one connected system.
This route rewards patience over a packed itinerary. The migration does not run on a schedule, so the best trips build in spare days rather than promising one dramatic crossing. The real prize is not a single photo; it is the rare continuity of following the same herds across a border, and the discipline to view it responsibly.
Best for
First-time safari-goers · Wildlife photographers · Couples and honeymooners · Travelers with a week or more
Daily itinerary
7 to 10 days to cover both the Mara and the Serengeti and Ngorongoro without rushing.
You can wake in Kenya and, a few hours by road or light aircraft later, be watching the same herds in Tanzania. Few modern trips offer that kind of continuity, but the Namanga border crossing and the driving distances mean this is a route that needs real days, not a rushed long weekend.
Best time to visit
The migration drives the calendar. Mara river crossings peak roughly late July to October; the calving season is December to March in the southern Serengeti and Ndutu. The dry season gives the best game visibility; the green season is cheaper and quieter.
- December to March: Calving season in the southern Serengeti and Ndutu; dense predator action on the short-grass plains.
- April to May: Green season: lush and quiet with lower prices; check road conditions.
- July to October: Mara river crossings and peak dry-season game viewing; busiest and most expensive.
- November: Short rains and the herds beginning to move south again; a quieter shoulder.
Things worth knowing
- The Great Migration river crossings on the Mara River, roughly July to October on both the Kenyan and Tanzanian sides.
- The wildebeest calving season around February in the southern Serengeti and Ndutu.
Where to stay
Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya
Kenya’s flagship reserve and the northern end of the Serengeti ecosystem, with dense predator populations year-round and the famous river crossings from July to October. The bordering private conservancies are quieter and premium.
Best for: River-crossing drama · Big-cat sightings · First-timers
Peak season crowds gather at crossing points, and park fees are at their highest from July to December.
Central Serengeti (Seronera), Tanzania
The core of the ecosystem, with reliable big-cat sightings in any month whether or not the migration is passing. The easy choice for first-timers who cannot time the herds precisely.
Best for: Year-round game viewing · First-timers
Less migration drama outside the months the herds pass through; the central airstrip area can be busy.
Northern Serengeti (Kogatende), Tanzania
The Tanzanian side of the same Mara River crossings, July and August, with fewer crowds than the Kenyan bank. Remote, fly-in camp country.
Best for: Crossing photography · Quieter crossings
Very seasonal and remote; quiet outside the July to August and October to November windows.
Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania
A UNESCO natural and cultural World Heritage site around the world’s largest intact caldera, with exceptionally dense resident wildlife including rhino, all in a contained crater floor.
Best for: Guaranteed dense game viewing · Rhino sightings · Dramatic crater-rim lodges
The crater floor gets congested with vehicles at peak times, and the separate crater-descent fee stacks on top of other park fees.
Arusha (gateway), Tanzania
The staging town for the northern Tanzania circuit, near Kilimanjaro International Airport and a base for Lake Manyara day trips. Logistics rather than a safari destination in itself.
Best for: Arrival and departure night · Lake Manyara day trips
Not a wildlife destination; purely a start or end point.

Food & drink
- Nyama choma: Grilled meat, goat, beef or chicken slow-roasted over open flame; a genuine social dish across both Kenya and Tanzania.
- Ugali: A neutral maize-flour staple served with stews, sauces and meat; the backbone of many meals in the region.
- Kenyan and Tanzanian coffee: East African highland coffee, rich and robust, often part of the early wake-up before a game drive.
- Bush breakfast and sundowner: The defining safari ritual: a cooked breakfast set up in the field, then sunset drinks overlooking the plains.
- Full-board lodge dining: Most camps and lodges run all meals included, since guests are far from any other food.
Nearly all camps in this circuit are full-board, with meals timed around the morning and late-afternoon game drives. The bush breakfast and the sundowner are as much a part of the day as the wildlife.

Getting around
- Fly into Jomo Kenyatta International in Nairobi (NBO) for the Masai Mara, or Kilimanjaro International (JRO) near Arusha for the northern Tanzania circuit.
- Light aircraft connect park airstrips such as Musiara, Seronera and Kogatende for fly-in safaris.
- Game drives use a 4x4 with a pop-up roof and a licensed guide; off-roading is restricted, especially near calving grounds and crossings.
- The Namanga post is the standard overland crossing between Kenya and Tanzania; formalities on both sides take time.
- Fly-in saves days over the road; road safaris are cheaper and show the Rift Valley between parks.
Things worth knowing
- · Trying to fit both countries into a rushed long weekend rather than a week or more.
- · Chasing a single fixed river-crossing date instead of building in slack days.
- · Underbudgeting for park and conservation fees, which stack up fast.

Frequently asked questions
How many days do you need for a Kenya and Tanzania safari?
Seven to ten days lets you cover the Masai Mara plus the Serengeti and Ngorongoro without rushing. The border crossing and driving distances make a shorter trip feel hurried.
When is the best time to see the Great Migration?
The Mara river crossings peak roughly July to October, while the calving season is December to March in the southern Serengeti and Ndutu. The migration is unpredictable, so build in slack days.
Is a fly-in or road safari better?
Fly-in between park airstrips saves days and is more comfortable but costs more. A road safari in a 4x4 is cheaper and shows the landscape between parks, but the border crossing adds a full day.
How much do park fees add to a safari?
A lot. The Mara, Serengeti and Ngorongoro each charge separate daily fees, and Ngorongoro adds a per-vehicle crater-descent fee, so fees can rival lodging over a multi-park trip. Confirm current rates with the authorities.
What health precautions should you take?
Malaria is present, and some prophylaxis must start before travel, so see a doctor or travel clinic well ahead. A yellow fever certificate can be required depending on your routing. This is general information, not medical advice.
